Fernsehturm is a television tower in the city center of Berlin. It is very close to Alexanderplatz square. The East German administration aimed for the tower, which was built between 1965 and 1969, to become the symbol of Berlin. The tower, which is seen as the symbol of the city today, can be seen from the city center and some suburbs. At 368 meters tall, the tower is the tallest structure in Germany.
Overview
When completed, the tower was 365 meters long. However, with the new antenna installed in the 1990s, its total length reached 368 meters. Fernsehturm is the 4th tallest unsupported structure in Europe after Ostankino Tower, Kyiv TV Tower and Riga Radio and TV Tower. Inside the sphere at the top of the tower is the visitor area and the revolving restaurant. The visitor area is approximately 204 meters above the ground and visibility is up to 42 kilometers during clear weather periods. The restaurant, which makes a full tour every 30 minutes, is several meters above the visitor area. While the original rotation speed was 1 lap per hour, the speed has been doubled after a refurbishment in the 1990s. Two elevators inside the hull can take visitors up to the globe in 40 seconds.
During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which was held in Germany and played in the final at the Berlin Olympic Stadium, the globe was decorated in the shape of a soccer ball in the color of galarda, the color of one of the sponsors of the tournament, Deutsche Telekom.
