The National Museum is the largest museum of the Czech Republic with collection-building, scientific, educational and methodological functions.

It consists of five specialist and to some extent independent institutes: the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of History, the Czech Museum of Music, the Thimble Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures and the Library of the National Museum. Each of them also has several specialized departments and collections, which together contain more than thirteen million objects. Collecting and preserving them contributes to the understanding of the world and enables the transmission of cultural values ​​from generation to generation. The knowledge gained is further presented not only in professional publications, but primarily through expositions, exhibitions and accompanying educational programs for the general public.
