The Atomium is a monumental building in Brussels, Belgium, built for Expo 58 in 1958. It was designed by André Waterkeyn.
It is formed by joining nine 102-metre high steel spheres. It is inspired by the magnification of the crystal lattice structure of iron 165 billion times. While it was expected to stop for 6 months, it has become the symbol of modern Brussels architecture today. The spheres were connected to each other with 12 pipes and the transition to the fair halls was made with escalators. The highest sphere dominates the panoramic view of Brussels. Each sphere is 18 m in diameter. In 2008, 3 spheres were closed to visitors and the others can be reached by escalators. Elevators moving in the vertical direction, on the other hand, move very fast.
